How we check whether AI recommends you
The short answer
We ask ChatGPT and Gemini 14 questions your customers ask, like who to call for a burst pipe in your town. We ask each one three times, then record whether you’re named, who’s named instead, and which websites the answers drew on.
More people now ask an AI assistant who to call, instead of searching Google. We check what those assistants say about you.
What we ask
We put together 14 questions a customer in your area would ask, based on your trade, your services and your town. For example:
- Who's a good plumber in Round Rock?
- Who can fix a water heater today near Pflugerville?
- Who should I call to replace a water heater in Georgetown?
Who we ask
ChatGPT and Gemini, two of the most widely used assistants. We ask them the way a customer would, with your town in the question, so the answers name local businesses.
How we ask
AI assistants don't give the same answer every time. So we ask each question three times, on each assistant. That's 84 answers per check. One answer could be luck. Six answers to the same question show a pattern.
What we record
For every answer:
- Whether you're recommended, just mentioned, or not there at all
- Who's recommended instead, and how often
- Which websites the answer drew on, like directories, review sites or your own site
You can read every actual answer on your AI Visibility screen, not just our summary of it.
What you see
Your AI Visibility screen shows how often you're recommended across all the answers, how that changed since the last check, which businesses get recommended instead, and every question we asked.
What we see on your website
Once your site is live, we also count three things on it: AI programs reading your pages, an assistant opening one of your pages while it answers someone, and people clicking through to you from an AI answer.
When it runs
Your first check starts once your website is live, and its results appear within a few days. We check again over time, so you can see whether things are moving.
