What happens on switch day?
The short answer
You add a few settings where your domain is managed. We bring over your blog posts, switch your address, and add the padlock that keeps visits secure. Your old site keeps showing until the switch finishes, which can take up to a day.
Switch day is the moment your domain starts showing your new site. Here's what happens, in the order your portal shows it.
- Your turn: add your records
Your portal names the company your domain is with and shows exactly what to add there. Your address stays the same, your old site stays up, and you leave your email records alone.
- We bring over your old site
We save your blog posts, legal pages and the rest of your old site on our side. This takes a few minutes.
- Switching over
Your domain starts pointing at your new site. This can take up to a day to reach everyone. Until then, some people still see your old site, and that's normal.
- Adding the padlock
Your domain reaches your new site, and we add the padlock (HTTPS) that keeps visits secure. Nothing is needed from you.
- Done
Your domain shows your new site, and we email you to say so.
If something's in the way
Your old website company still has your domain set up. The portal tells you, and you ask them to remove it on their side. We carry on by ourselves as soon as they do.
You'd rather not do it alone. Ask, and we'll do the switch with you on a call. We'll be in touch within a day.
What to leave alone
- Your email records (MX). Leave them exactly as they are, and your email keeps working.
- Your old website plan. Keep it for 30 days after the switch. Some companies tie your domain or email to it.
Leads during the switch
The moment your domain reaches your new site, its contact form works and every lead is sent to you. While some people still see your old site, its form works the way it always has.
